Description

A Berserker is a kind of offensive deviant from the Warrior in training, but more of a Rogue who attacks from the front than a Warrior when in combat. Restricted by their inability to wear heavy armour, including most kinds of plate mail, they lack the durability of their tougher melee cousins. Berserkers specialise in dealing not taking damage and will suffer when asked to stand toe to toe with an opponent. It is only when they are able to concentrate fully on inflicting damage that a Berserker shows their true worth, in a Warriors role they can be a poor substitute.

The real and only ability Berserkers have is in dealing a lot of damage in a short period, they are capable of out damaging every other profession when at their best and at worst can rival a poorly equipped Rogue with ease. The only drawback of their Wizard like ability to deal melee damage, is their Wizard like ability to annoy the subject of their Berserker's frenzy. Berserkers have a lot of hit points and can withstand damage better than their spell casting counterpart but are no match for a Knight or Warrior in prolonged combat. If they are engaged their main priority should be to disengage, as they are too costly to heal and take too long recover when damage is taken so easily.

An experienced and alert Berserker is a powerful and useful ally, an inexperienced and unwary Berserker can be a liability; Berserkers have to be very careful in order to be safe when fighting more than one creature, and especially so when adventuring alone. They have several abilities which help to avoid an opponents attention and are still superb offensive combatants in the right situations. With two handed weapons (the only weapons they can use) they have no equal and have the additional complementary skill of being able to summon weapons that can be thrown at their enemies. At later levels their abilities gain magical enchantments which contribute greatly to their flexibility in an otherwise limited role.

Stats

A Berserkers goal in every fight is to inflict more damage than anyone else can hope for, to help them achieve this they need a high strength; though this statistic is quite easy to raise through items with enchantments, so increasing their toughness by raising stamina can be more advantageous. Berserkers are known for being one of the strongest classes and all the races capable of producing them are naturally strong and hardy, regardless of any artefacts or enchantments the individual may carry.

Berserkers will get the attention of their opponents quite easily early in their development and a high agility helps to avoid incoming blows. Its a secondary concern to strength and stamina but worth considering when choosing items with otherwise similar statistics. Berserkers are often seen carrying items which produce magical effects in combat, the frequency of these effects is partially determined by dexterity and increasing this statistic can make the effects significantly more useful in fights of a short duration.

Tips

1. Strength directly effects the amount of damage you can dish out, go for items which greatly benefit this statistic at every opportunity.

2. Total hit points are influenced by stamina, a few extra can make the difference between being face down in the dirt and surviving long enough for your opponent to be defeated.

3. Many Berserkers favour items with magical effects, consider increasing your dexterity when you have the option.

4. A Berserkers weapon is their best friend, invest most of your cash into buying the best available for your level, your armour shouldn't have a lot of work to do in a Berserker's role.

Screenshots

With thanks to Frilok (Wood Elf *), ??? (???), ??? (???), ??? (???) and ??? (???) of the Karana server for being the Berserker screenshot models!

* Frilok's Elven appearance is the result of a magical item, normally Wood Elves can't be Berserkers
