Description
The Mage (or Magician) as they are
known, is a dedicated spell caster who specialises in the art of conjuration
(summoning). They have the widest variety of spells in this area and are at
their most efficient when using them. Magician summoning spells cost less mana
and take less time to recover from than those cast by any other profession,
among the items they can summon are food, drink, weapons, armour, bags and their
trademark: elementals.
The elementals Magicians summon are
one of the four base elements air, earth, fire and water. Each has a different
special ability (like a spell they can cast) and is most effective in a certain
role. Earth elementals for example have the ability to root (temporarily freeze
a creature to the ground), which is useful when you want to avoid your opponent
coming directly at you or try to run away. It is when the Magician has learnt
how to best make use their pets (elementals) and spells that they begin to
become a powerful combination.
Magicians have more spells than just
summoning and don't purely rely on their pets to deal combat damage. They can
inflict considerable damage with blast spells (nukes) and are capable of
reducing all magical resistances except disease and poison, and increasing those
same resists for their own party. Magicians can also raise armour class,
increase strength and even heal their own elementals, with further limited
abilities to raise their own, except for the healing.
In a group Magicians are a two for
one, their elementals providing an additional combatant who is also capable of
taking a lot of damage and the Magician summoning supplies, raising/reducing
magical resists and casting damaging blasts on the enemy. Magicians can also
help to get a party into a difficult area quickly, with a spell that can summon
their companions (compared to other spells of the type that can only summon
pets). They are also very good soloists, using their pets to keep the enemy in
close combat (and away from the magician) while they stand back and do the
casting.

Stats
Magicians, like many other dedicated
spell casters rely on their intelligence in order to be effective, it
determines both the size of their mana pool and how efficient their spell
casting abilities are. A sharp memory and eye for detail helps with their research
while a dexterous hand can help with the more delicate physical requirements of
the profession.
Magicians avoid taking a direct part
in physical combat, preferring to use their pets as a personal Warrior. The
smarter creatures do sometimes realise this tactic, or get so annoyed with the
Magician their pet becomes a minor concern. This means Magicians still need to
be prepared for taking hits and building a decent stamina can be a factor
in this preparation.

Tips
1. Intelligence is your 'core'
statistic, keep it high and you will have less of a problem with long fights
where you could easily run out of mana.
2. Elementals don't all have
identical abilities and statistics, learn which situations suit each elemental
best.
3. Many of your summoning spells
cost you little time or money and can be a great help to others. Offer to summon
arrows and bandages for younger characters and you'll make many friends.
4. Your elementals don't cost a
lot of mana or reagents to summon, if one looks like its near death get ready to
cast another.
